NAIS Publishes “Depth of Perception” in Winter 2025 Edition of Independent School Magazine

The newest edition of the NAIS magazine Independent School includes a featured article by Ari Betof and Christina Dotchin sharing a preview of Enrollment Management Association’s (EMA) upcoming special report An Independent School Education: Family Perceptions of Value and Affordability.

The special report is a groundbreaking study that offers a large-scale analysis of how families across the socioeconomic spectrum perceive the value and affordability of independent school education. Based on over 1,000 responses from parents and caregivers across 43 U.S. states and territories, seven Canadian provinces, and 40 countries, the report delivers critical insights into the complex factors shaping families’ decisions to enroll their children in independent schools. Informed by behavioral economics and education sector research, the study underscores the pressing opportunities and challenges schools face in aligning their value proposition with the expectations and financial realities of prospective families. This task is made more difficult by the reality that the factors families value most can vary greatly, even within the same school.
